Brief history of Liberia, West Africa
In 1822 a settlement of freed U.S. slaves created Liberia in Western Africa.
By 1847, the Americo-Liberians were able to establish a republic.
A military coup in 1980 ushered in a decade of authoritarian rule followed by a civil war.
The war resulted in the deaths of approximately 250,000 people and devastated Liberia's economy.
A 2003 peace agreement ended the war and free elections were held in 2005.

2018: Former international footballer George Weah was elected president.
2024: Joseph Boakai sworn in as Liberia’s new president for a 6 year term in January, 2024. With his long career in politics, Liberians expect Boakai to follow through with his campaign promises in creating jobs, improving the economy, and fighting corruption.
