Recent History
and Challenges
Liberia was disrupted by civil war and instability from 1989-2003. Liberia had a major outbreak of the Ebola Virus from 2014-2016. Then in March of 2020, the country experienced a massive wave of the Covid-19 pandemic leaving a devastating impact on the country’s economy and educational systems.
Apart from the high death toll, civil war caused disabilities, and widespread infections, there has been major displacement of families leaving a large number of children without parents. Schooling has been frequently interrupted, leading to “over-age” students at all levels. Physical and mental trauma has had a profound effect on learning.
Infrastructure issues greatly impact recovery. There are very few paved roads outside of the major cities making it impossible to drive throughout the country during the rainy season. Reliable electricity since the civil war leaves many communities without power. Liberia also suffers from a lack of technological infrastructure leaving many without access to the internet.
